Clifton’s Historical Museum/ Sister Kenny’s Memorial and Rudd’s Pub

Outing Description

We are going on a road trip! To visit 3 separate historical destinations. First we will have morning tea at a café on the way then we are off to visit the Clifton Historical Museum.

Clifton Historical Museum Description

The Clifton Historical Museum is a worthy tribute to the district's pioneering past. Housed in the old butter factory, you can take a step back in time and visit a 1930s dining room, a pioneer bedroom, an early hospital ward, kitchen and children's room. The Heritage room allows access to original records of local businesses and schools. Read the memoirs of long-time residents, browse through the photographic collection, or look for your forebears on the database. An extensive range of early agricultural tools and machinery will evoke memories of yesteryear. Old movie memorabilia, communication, history, musical pieces; there's something for everyone, discover it for yourself.

Next we make our way to Sister Kenny’s Memorial in Nobby

Sister Kenny’s Memorial Description

Visit the memorial of Sister Elizabeth Kenny (born 20 September 1880, died 30 November 1952), who had a significant world-wide impact on the treatment of polio (Infantile Paralysis), one of the world`s most devastating diseases. Sister Kenny lived in Nobby and received world recognition for her revolutionary treatment of polio victims in the early to mid twentieth century. She challenged the then current medical practice of immobilising muscles affected by polio and proved that exercising them aided in patient recovery.

This memorial chronicles her life and gives an account of the battles she had with the male-dominated medical establishment of the day.

She is buried in the peaceful Nobby cemetery which overlooks the wide, rolling hills, and her life is also commemorated by a local memorial park.

And lastly we will have lunch at one of the most historic pubs in Queensland ‘The Rudd’s Pub’ also known as the ‘Steel Rudd’s Pub’

Rudd’s Pub Description and History

Rudd's Pub was built in 1893 and was originally called the "Davenporter" hotel. The name was changed to Rudd's Pub in the 1980's in recognition of the author Steele Rudd. The hotel itself is quite unique and still retains the character and charm of a hotel from a bygone era. The walls tell a photographic story of days gone by and memorabilia covers the walls and the ceiling. Farming implements from long ago, tools that your great grandfather may of used, bottles, kitchen utensils, books, and many other interesting items too numerous to mention. Tourists have likened it to "eating in a museum".

Steele Rudd (real name Arthur Hoey Davis) lived in Nobby for a period of time and folklore says that he used to sit in front of the fire place in our Heritage room and pen some of his famous "Dad & Dave" stories.

After lunch we will drop you home for the conclusion of the outing.
